Volunteer Role: 

The American Independence Museum (AIM) in Exeter, NH is looking for volunteer educators to facilitate education programs including school field trips, homeschool events, summer camps, Family Saturdays and more. Share your love of history with families and children! If you are a people-person who enjoys having a flexible schedule, this volunteer role provides you with the opportunity to meet other history-loving volunteers and to interact and engage with the public on a regular basis.

All programs are designed to share diverse and unique stories of the Revolutionary era in honest, relevant, compassionate and unexpected ways. A commitment to inclusiveness is at the center of our work. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

Must be able to: Walk between two buildings • Ascend and descend stairs • Stand for up to 90 minutes • Wear a mask as required • Participate in orientation and group evaluations • Accept assignments appropriately suited to your talents and skills • Adhere to the mission, vision, values and ethics of AIM • Act in a professional manner at all times and treat all visitors, staff, interns, and volunteers with respect

Qualifications:

  • Interest in working with the public, especially families, students and children • Love of history  • Ability to work well with others, accept supervision, and remain flexible • Teaching and/or customer service skills • Willingness to learn new information • Ability to learn lesson plans 

Commitment/Schedule:

As needed, mostly seasonal April-November  • Mostly weekdays with some evenings and weekends  • Programs typically run for 90 minutes either once or twice a day,  two days a week • Enjoy a flexible schedule, sign up for as many or as few programs you wish.

The American Independence Museum

Opened to the public in 1991, the American Independence Museum includes the 1721 Ladd-Gilman House, a National Landmark property, and the Folsom Tavern, built in 1775. Home to a world-class collection of 3,000 historic artifacts, including an original printing of the Declaration of Independence and early drafts of the Constitution, the museum is currently developing a variety of public and education programs in virtual and online formats to encourage inclusion for all ages.
