Not sure what to do with your kitchen, garden and yard scraps? Would you like natural, home-made compost for your lawns and gardens in the spring? Join us at the Squam Lakes Association on Saturday, Feb. 24th from 1:00-3:00 p.m. to learn the ins and outs of composting! Composting is a great way to better ourselves as true conservationists, and reduce our impact on the watershed that the SLA works to protect. Conservation professional, and Lakes Region Conservation Corps AmeriCorps member, Erin Shilling, will teach participants about using materials like kitchen scraps as well as animal/human waste as compost, which isn’t as scary as it sounds! “There are a variety of methods to get rich, nutritious soil from composting, depending on what your needs are and what you have available,” said Erin, “and we’ll talk about them all.”
This workshop will begin with an introductory session on composting explaining why composting is important for the environment, what types of composting the SLA is involved in, what composted dirt can be used for, how to make different types of compost containers, and some of the exciting science behind how composting works! Participants of this program will walk away with an understanding of how to design and build a composting system, how they work, and an overall appreciation for why composting is important for the environment.
