Description

Join the Squam Lakes Association (SLA) for a hike up to the spectacular summit of Livermore Mountain in Holderness. LRCC Americorps member and conservation professional, Ben Grunwald will lead participants on a moderate 2.5mi hike up the mountain via Prescott Trail and Old Mountain Road. Participants will meet at the Burleigh Farm parking area at 9am, and should be prepared with cold weather hiking gear as well as water and snacks for the hike. These guided hikes are designed to encourage members of our community to achieve SLA’s Squam Ranger challenge, but all hikers, ages 12 and up, looking to experience the beauty of Squam in the winter are welcome to attend.

Although the trail network around Squam may be familiar to much of our community during the summer, winter hiking can provide a new perspective and appreciation of the region. Finding incredible ice formations on the cliffs, tracks through the snow, and beautiful vistas from the peaks are just a few of the many reasons to get out in the Squam watershed. Through our guided hikes, the SLA hopes to offer fun and safe excursions that can give participants a deeper understanding of the importance of conservation in the watershed. In addition, the hikes are an opportunity to learn about current conservation efforts around Squam and ways our community can get involved protecting the area this coming year.

Livermore Mountain via Prescott trail, is a fairly gentle hike with switchbacks up steeper sections that allow it to be accessible to hikers with relatively little experience. Participants should wear layers of clothing appropriate for the temperatures and weather, as well as providing their own snacks and water on the hike. The SLA can provide up to 6 pairs of snowshoes, however it is recommended that participants bring their own traction devices (snowshoes or spikes) if possible. Updates and details about properly preparing for winter hikes will be sent out after participants RSVP for the guided hike.
