Our Mission is to welcome people of all ages to the John Hay Estate at The Fells, making each visit an enriching experience with opportunities to explore and learn from our natural lakeside setting, our renowned historic buildings and gardens, and the historic achievements of three generations of Hay family visionaries. Our Vision is a restored and preserved Hay family estate on Lake Sunapee that: Draws people together to share interests in history, gardens, our natural setting, and the protection of the lake; Stimulates further their pursuit of those interests by offering enriching educational programs and events that feature three generations of Hay family visionaries; Provides access that lets visitors enjoy their John Hay Estate experience within a safe, tranquil environment.
What We Do
The John Hay Estate at The Fells serves a broad and diverse community drawn to its natural beauty, cultural heritage, and educational offerings. Situated on the shore of Lake Sunapee, The Fells is one of New England’s finest surviving early 20th‑century summer estates and the only one on Lake Sunapee still standing and open to the public. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the property welcomes approximately 10,000 visitors each year. The Estate benefits local residents and regional visitors seeking access to preserved natural landscapes, cultivated gardens, and historic architecture. Families and children participate in festivals, summer camps, school field trips, and hands‑on learning experiences. Students and lifelong learners attend classes and workshops in ecology, nature, horticulture, history, and art. Artists and cultural audiences experience The Fells through exhibitions, performances, and creative programming. Couples and community groups utilize the grounds for weddings, ceremonies, and gatherings. Outdoor enthusiasts enjoy woodland trails, the protected shoreline, and unique features such as the Fairy Garden Each year.
The Fells offers roughly 30 programs and workshops, along with guided tours of the Main House and landscape. Visitors are invited to explore the estate year‑round, experiencing its natural resources, historic significance, and commitment to conservation.
