Who We Are

We are an agency, founded by former ICU patients with a mission to improve the education of the public about PICS, the likelihood of former ICU patients experiencing PICS, the lack of information given to ICU patients discharged from hospitals about PICS and the failure of the critical care profession to inform former ICU patients about PICS or to provide treatment to PICS sufferers. Our agency hopes to become positioned through growing or membership to engage decision-makers, to start a discussion about ways to improve the education and medical treatment of PICS sufferers. We need you to make our voice heard. We need as many members as possible to stand with us by joining PostICU. People can also participate at PostICU in many other ways: Be an active participant and work on a project of your choice. Be a passive member, and stay up-to-date about developments with regards to PICS and our organization's mission. Donate to PostICU, all contributions go towards "getting the word out," about PICS, through a variety of planned outreach methods.

What We Do

We stand as the only patient built 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation dedicated to educating the public about the millions of former ICU patients suffering from post intensive care syndrome ("PICS"). As we move through uncharted waters, as non-medical professionals in a technical world, we hope to grow our ranks, so that we become positioned to advocate on behalf of future ICU patients. WHY IS POST INTENSIVE CARE UNIT SYNDROME ("PICS") A MAJOR HEALTH CRISIS? 1. Every year, millions of people are admitted to intensive care units ["ICUs"] in the US. 2. More than one-half of those ICU patients will suffer from PICS. 3. Only a handful of those patients will figure that they have PICS. 40%, Will Experience Depression 25%, Will Experience Anxiety 40%, Will Have Cognitive Deficits (similar to a traumatic brain injury) 25%, Will Have Cognitive Deficits (similar to patients with mild dementia) We know that the more people that join PostICU, the more clout we will carry, which in turn will allow us, as a group, to make recommendations to the critical care medical community and health insurance companies about ways to improve outcomes for patients who spend time in an ICU. One would be hard-pressed to find medical professionals that would disagree with the importance of our mission. Our commonsense recommendations are: 1. iCU patients, their caregivers, and/or family members should be educated, prior to or in conjunction with discharge from a hospital, about PICS symptoms. Because it Is more likely than not that they will suffer from one or more of these symptoms. 2. The discharging hospital should assign, to all former ICU patients, their caregivers, and/or family members, a specialist well-versed in PICS medical care to follow up with and to make recommendations for all required medical care for the former ICU patients, their caregivers, and/or family members. 3. For more complex PICS symptoms, the said specialist, described above, shall convene a multi-disciplined team of medical professionals to confer and assess the former ICU patient, and make team recommendations for required followup post ICU testing and medical care. 4. Health Insurance carriers, Medicaid, and Medicare should accept responsibility for payment of all testing and medical care that is recommended by the medical specialist and/or multi-disciplined team (described above). On our website we are building a library of PICS research and PICS articles to share with the public. We plan to make our library suitable for everyone, from laypeople to critical care professionals.
