Put Your Skills to Work Where They Matter
Join the Board of Trustees of the Mt. Kearsarge Indian Museum
Looking for a board role where your experience, perspective, and judgment truly make a difference?
The Mt. Kearsarge Indian Museum (MKIM) is seeking engaged, thoughtful leaders—professionals, retirees, and community members alike—to join its Board of Trustees at an important moment of growth and transition. This is an opportunity to contribute real leadership, not a ceremonial title, to an organization with statewide cultural significance.
MKIM serves as a living center for Native history, artistic expression, and contemporary voices in New Hampshire, a state with no Federally or State-recognized Native tribes and no reservation lands. Each year, approximately 8,000 visitors, including 2000 schoolchildren, engage with Native culture through our exhibitions, programs, and events.
Why Join Now?
MKIM has put itself on solid financial footing. Now the museum has the freedom to think bigger. This is a moment to reimagine what MKIM can become - new programs, new partnerships, new ways of bringing Native voices, culture, and wisdom to the public. Trustees joining now will help turn that creative energy into experiences that deepen impact and expand who the museum reaches. Whether you are in the midst of your career or bring a lifetime of experience, this is a chance to make a real contribution.
This Is a Working Board
We are seeking Trustees who are ready to be active contributors.
Trustees are expected to:
Prepare for and participate actively in monthly Board meetings
Serve on at least one committee and take ownership of projects
Provide oversight on finances, strategy, and major decisions
Support fundraising and donor relationship-building
Attend events and serve as ambassadors for the Museum
Advise and support the Executive Director in implementing strategy
Time & Structure
Average commitment: 4–8 hours per month (with flexibility for deeper involvement)
Monthly Board meetings (primarily virtual; two in-person meetings annually in Warner, NH)
Three-year terms; up to two consecutive terms
Financial Participation
There is no required minimum gift. Trustees are asked to make MKIM a philanthropic priority and to give annually at a level meaningful to them. Full Board participation in giving is essential to institutional credibility.
Skills That Are Especially Helpful
Experience in finance, legal, development, IT, or digital marketing is welcome—but commitment, curiosity, and a willingness to engage matter most. Interest in Native history and contemporary Native issues is important; prior expertise is helpful but not required.
Trustee positions are volunteer and unpaid.
