HOBY was founded by Hugh O’Brian in 1958 as a nonprofit organization with a mission to inspire a global community of youth and volunteers to a life dedicated to leadership, service, and innovation. From 1958 to 1967, leadership seminars only took place in Los Angeles for High School sophomores from California. The success of the program over the first 10 years resulted in the expansion of the scope of the HOBY program. In 1968, seminars included international as well as national participants, and the leadership seminars moved to major cities across the United States on an annual basis.
Our flagship Leadership Seminar program allows high school sophomores to recognize their leadership talents and apply them in becoming effective, ethical leaders in their home, school, workplace and community. Students attend our three-day seminar and participate in hands-on leadership activities, meet leaders in their state, and explore their own personal leadership skills while learning how to make a positive impact in their community. The seminar curriculum is based on the Social Change Model of Leadership and develops leadership from three perspectives: Personal Leadership, Group Leadership, and Leadership for Society.
Each year, we search for the best possible volunteers to make our seminar OUTSTANDING! We're looking for volunteers in the roles of:
- Junior Facilitator (18 and under)
- Senior Facilitator (21 and above)
- Team Alumni
For 2022, we've made the decision to return our annual seminar to its usual format in-person at St. Anselm College in Manchester, NH from Friday, June 16th to Sunday June 19th, 2021. Please note that due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, all volunteers and ambassadors will be required to provide proof of vaccination prior to seminar weekend. We will also be following all federal, state, and local guidelines regarding mask-wearing and social distancing. A background check is required for this opportunity.
Application is due Sunday, February 13th, 2021 at 11:59 PM.
We will be holding Zoom Q&A sessions regarding applying for and participating in seminar on January 8th and 22nd. More information will be published on our Instagram (@hobynh).
We also understand that 2020 and 2021 have been difficult years for service and extracurricular activities, so if you have any concerns, please email Director of Volunteers Michael Zrzavy (zrzavym@nhhoby.org).
