Description

Join the Squam Lakes Association on Tuesday, March 20th from 1:00-3:00 pm for a guided hike in the Rattlesnake trail network! AmeriCorps conservation professional, Erin Shilling, will lead recreational hikers (and dogs!) out on the trail. This hike is perfect for those who want to get out and explore some of the best trails in the Squam watershed. Participants will meet Erin at the SLA and then drive together to the Undercut trail head on Pinehurst Road, hike across the trail to Rt. 113, and then connect to the Morse Trail for a total hike of ~1.5 miles. These trails descend gradually and shouldn’t be strenuous, but the winter conditions could change this slightly, and hikers should come prepared for a fun challenge.

The SLA recommends participants dress appropriately for cold weather, and bring plenty of snacks and water. Participants should wear layers of clothing appropriate for the temperatures and weather, as well as providing their own snacks and water on the hike. The SLA can provide up to 6 pairs of snowshoes; however it is recommended that participants bring their own traction devices (snowshoes or micro-spikes) if possible. Updates and details about properly preparing for winter hikes will be sent out after participants that RSVP for the guided hike. Erin will contact you the day before the program runs to do a recap of what the weather forecast looks like and give recommendations for gear.

For more information, or to sign up for this Adventure Ecology program, visit the SLA website (squamlakes.org) or contact the SLA directly (603-968-7336). The SLA also offers other guided hikes and environmental programs throughout the winter. These free programs, presented by the LRCC AmeriCorps members at the SLA, are open to the public and cover a variety of conservation related topics and recreational activities around the lake.

The Squam Lakes Association is dedicated to conserving for public benefit the natural beauty, peaceful character and resources of the watershed. In collaboration with local and state partners the SLA promotes the protection, careful use and shared enjoyment of the lakes, mountains, forests, open spaces and wildlife of the Squam Lakes region.
