Do you want to experience more of the trails the Squam Lakes region has to offer? Join the Squam Lakes Association (SLA) on Tuesday, March 6th from 10:30am to 1:30pm for a hike along the trail network to East Rattlesnake mountain with Lakes Region AmeriCorps member and conservation professional, Connor Piechota!
Along the hike, Connor will discuss the different aspects of experiencing this area, using the hiking trails as an example of access. He will also point out certain qualities of the trail, such as blazing, and explain why some hiking trails are designed the way they are. Participants will also become familiar with what the Squam Lakes Association does to help maintain these trails for responsible use for the public.
Participants will meet at the SLA, located at 534 US Rt. 3 in Holderness prior to traveling to the trailhead. Two SLA vehicles will be used to shuttle participants for this excursion, dropping one off at the trailhead for Butterworth Trail on Metcalf Road, and the other at the Col Trail trail head. The hike will then ascend up Col Trail to the ridge, and back down to the junction for East Rattlesnake Trail. Then, hike up to the peak of East Rattlesnake to enjoy the beautiful scenery of Squam Lake. The journey will finish by descending down Butterworth Trail to join up with the shuttle car by the trailhead.
This program provides the opportunity to explore some of the lesser-traveled trails within the Squam watershed. This works in conjunction with the Squam Ranger program, which encourages the public to explore every trail that the Squam Lakes Association works to maintain in an effort to spread our message of trail management, stewardship, and conservation. Those who are interested in joining the hike should bring plenty of food and water, warm clothes and extra layers, and appropriate footwear with either microspikes or snowshoes.
For more information, or to sign up for this Adventure Ecology program, visit the SLA website (squamlakes.org) or contact the SLA directly (603-968-7336). The SLA also offers other guided hikes and environmental programs throughout the year. These free programs, presented by the LRCC AmeriCorps members at the SLA, are open to the public and cover a variety of conservation related topics and activities around the lake.
